12:07 am - Congressman Dennis Kucinich on tonight's health care vote
“But instead of working toward the elimination of for-profit insurance, H.R. 3962 would put the government in the role of accelerating the privatization of health care. In H.R. 3962, the government is requiring at least 21 million Americans to buy private health insurance from the very industry that causes costs to be so high, which will result in at least $70 billion in new annual revenue, much of which is coming from taxpayers. This inevitably will lead to even more costs, more subsidies, and higher profits for insurance companies — a bailout under a blue cross.
Congressman Dennis Kucinich

Is he actually admitting that health care is currently not really a free market?

10:56 pm - Stevie's Saturday Summary of NaBloPoMo '09 Week 1
  • Sunday: due to working overnight from Saturday, instead of getting that extra hour of sleep that most everyone else got, I got an extra hour of overtime that I really didn't want.
  • Monday: not only was I again working overnight from Sunday, but I also had to come back to the job for an afternoon shift starting at 3pm.
  • Tuesday: originally I was scheduled for a morning shift, but thankfully the office supervisor didn't want to risk me getting sick from sleep deprivation and found someone to switch shifts with me.
  • Wednesday: of course, though, I get the call on Tuesday from that same office supervisor about the overnight guy calling off sick. No way was I gonna come in to cover those hours after getting out of that morning shift and then finishing my normally scheduled morning shift today! But in compromise, I did agree to come in three hours early (3am) so that he could go home at that time.
  • Thursday: originally I would've had a four-day weekend as a reward for pulling ten in a row with mixed shifts and "lack of sleep" in between, but this morning shift was the swap from Tuesday.
  • Yesterday: made some onion rings in the deep fryer. Discovered the timer really doesn't work too well below five minutes, as the rings turned out extra crispy.
  • Today: spent such a wonderfully warm Indian summer day indoors making waffles and playing online poker, but also got about half of the bathroom cleaning done.

06:58 pm - WoWcrackin'
So, Rayven and I were playing the WoW, as we like to do now and again, and a guy shows up with a kinda furry sounding name.  Says he likes our guild name. (Keepers of Foxfire)  He ends up joining the guild.  (First person in the guild that isn't an alt of mine or Rayven's, BTW.)  Turns out he's a fur too.  Whee!

05:32 pm - Do you ever feel this way?
Sometimes I feel like taking a vacation from my religion. I'd stop believing in God, or at least act like it, until I was ready to come back. The idea is that I would have my faith and love strengthened by the contrast -- absence makes the heart grow fonder, y'know?

Then a rational part of me notes the problem with this. Imagine you're on a cruise ship and getting bored with it. You could jump overboard to liven things up, with the anticipation of being grateful once the crew hauls you up. But at best, this is inconsiderate to everyone aboard who cares about you at all. Plus, if the ship's moving at a good clip when you jump, they'll take a while to turn and reach you; you'd better have good endurance for treading water. You'd also better hope that none of the more inhospitable inhabitants of the water get to you first.

02:42 pm - A pox: a review
OK, so last weekend, I came down ill. Fever, chills, dry cough, body aches, was very unpleasant. Didn't fully knock me on my back, though.

And then reviewing the symptoms, I find out that it appears to be the Bacon Plague.

A day after my fever broke, I watched all the same symptoms hit my roommate, Derrek, like a ton of bricks, knocking him on his back.

So here's what I think of the whole affair - getting the H1N1 swine flu, assuming that this is what it was, was not at all a pleasant experience. It was an experience that I don't wish to relive - but then again, I never enjoy reliving any illness. I mean, hell, how many people do you know that come right out and say that they want to contract a disease that makes them hurt like hell, makes them tired, gives them a low grade fever, and makes them not want to do anything but stay in bed?

OK, granted, those who contract it are at an immune advantage when they recover. So there is some merit in catching it - if only to get the damn thing over with.

An aside - I say "assuming" because I am not 100% sure. The symptoms match, from what I read, but I was never cultured for identification of the bug that hit me, so I only have the best-guess scenario. Which means it might also have been an acute case of a cardio-colonic intra-duodenal tumor on one of my adrenal glands that has since gone away after consulting with my hypothalamus, thus explaining (for no good reason whatsoever) the fever, chills, and soreness, but doesn't explain the hacking up of lung butter.

10:50 am - Why the Innocent flee from the police & Qbytes quote
http://www.lewrockwell.com/grigg/grigg-w115.html

IMHO, the article doesn't go far enough discussing all the people who are harmed by basic arrest tactics, how much money is made by issuing tickets (though there are several settled legal cases learned about in law school) resulting in people who have to hire attorneys and how much it costs the state to imprison people who are then never-charged or get off when they've paid said attorney to remind the state they are innocent... but yet have the fingerprints forever on a DB.

and for those who don't know, the Las Vegas PD have killed two other folks in the inside of a week - death grip and another w/ taser. yes both had health problems but the entire situations are suddenly obfiscated. today's missive from Peter McFarlane at Q Bytes regales the UK police en-masse raiding secure lock boxes at various banks. "But we are not here to scare you. At Q Wealth we believe in presenting practical solutions for your freedom, wealth and privacy. What lessons can we learn from this fiasco?

In my view, the UK and the USA are probably the countries with the most out-of-control governments in the whole world. The expectation of privacy, and being considered innocent until proven guilty, seem to be things of the past in those countries. Others, in particular Australia, are playing catch up very fast. These are the kinds of places where raids like this could be expected again in the future."

12:01 pm - Ft. Hood...
I heard about the Ft. Hood tragedy, but it didn't hit me personally until I got an IM a couple of days ago.

Paul's mom sent me an IM to tell me that Braden is fine. Braden is my nephew. Paul's sister's son.

I knew he was in the military, because his family came up here on thier way to watch him graduate in North Carolina a year or two ago.

But when she told me he was at Fort Hood, my heart sank a little. She said that Braden didn't even know that anything had happened until his mother (Paul's sister) called him to make sure he was okay.

I have no idea if he knew any of the victims, but just the thought that he could have been one of them really makes one think.

I am just so glad that he is okay.

09:19 am - The health care bill and mandatory insurance
As we all know, Congress is voting on the health care bill today. A bill that will include mandating that everyone has to buy health insurance with costly fines and even jail time for those who refuse.

I do not have nor do I want health insurance.

I've only needed to see a doctor once in the last 20 years and that was for a short lived bout with clinical depression that I'm now cured of.

Having to buy health insurance would be a waste for me.

A time may come when I'll need it, but I'm a grown adult, not a child, I'm perfectly capable of deciding when I need health insurance.

Some would say things along the lines of "what if you suddenly get hurt or sick?" Yeah, there is that possibility, but I'd rather take my chances, however foolish that may seem.

My point is that I DON'T WANT IT FORCED ON ME!

Even if it wouldn't ruin my credit rating because then I wouldn't be able to pay some of my other bills.

Why can't the creators of the bill leave people alone and let people decide for themselves when to get health insurance? Why do they insist on treating us like children who can't make out own decisions?

It's no wonder that people are saying things like "Attention congress. Ram health care down our throats and we'll ram it up your ass in 2010!"

06:33 am - Actively Getting the Libertarian Message Out!

Okay, so I have to parade my accomplishment around shamelessly, since I'm shamelessly promoting Libertarianism.

I live in Winston-Salem, NC, the fourth largest city in North Carolina and finally (a small accomplishment, but an accomplishment-don't dare rain on my parade damnit!) published one of my "Letters to the Editor".

I invite you to take a look. Mine is the third one down called the "New Motivation for Schools":

Read some of the responses as well! The thread gets kinda interesting.

The full text as published in the Journal is below:

New motivation for schools

I am writing to comment on the Nov. 1 New York Times article you reprinted, "States lower academic proficiency standards." New motivation is needed to get our public schools to teach our children properly and deserve the tax money we, the taxpayers, are forced to give.
The Libertarian Party has it right when stating that competition is a good way to motivate public schools (which would be competing with private and charter schools for money) to actually teach our children instead of dumbing them down and passing them along to graduation without the ability to read or write.

12:07 am - On Selling Out
Indy band Of Montreal have been accused of selling out since they've made a good bit of money selling their music to commercials for use in pushing various products and services, including Outback Steakhouse and Verizon Wireless. A music blog by the name of Stereogum caught up with them for an interview, and the result was frontman Kevin Barnes writing an article for the blog addressing the issue himself. He raises some good points here:

Got in a book review for Bruce Campbell's "If Chins Could Kill: Confessions Of A B Movie Actor". It was given to me by [info]j_wolfman , and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It is one of the better biographies I've had the pleasure of coming across. Not only that, but the copy I was given was autographed, and a personal account of the autograph experience was written on the inside of the back cover. Way cool. Thanks again, man!

Now playing: Journey - I'll Be Alright Without You
via FoxyTunes

After rap and hip-hop killed rock and roll in the late 90's/early 00's, could it be possible that the roots behind this wave of urban black music have exhausted their creativity? This article claims so. After years of pimp-gangsta-ho, it's looking like black artists may be turning to rock music to find their inspiration.

The food industry will lie to you to get you to buy foods that you think are healthy. What are some of the worst myths perpetuated by misleading labels?

Nothing is made in America any more. Or is it? Even though most of our consumer goods seem to come from Japan, America still enjoys the title of number one manufacturer in the world. Read this article to find out more about the realities behind the myth.
